The app collects nothing

NearBye has no accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting, and makes no network connections. There is no server. Nothing you do in the app is transmitted anywhere.

What stays on your Mac

Your settings — the device you selected, distance threshold, grace period, and lock method — are stored locally in macOS UserDefaults. If you choose your own lock sound, a copy of that audio file is saved inside NearBye's own folder on your Mac; it is never uploaded anywhere. Bluetooth signal-strength readings are processed in memory and never written to disk. Diagnostic logs contain only numbers and local device identifiers, and never leave your machine.

Bluetooth

NearBye uses Bluetooth solely to measure how far away your chosen device is, so it can lock your Mac when you walk away. It reads signal strength; it does not read the contents of, or communicate with, your device beyond what a Bluetooth connection requires.
